DENTON — Freshman forward Taylor Padia’s game-winner lifts the UTSA soccer team to a 1-0 victory over North Texas in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Roadrunners (3-3) scored the lone goal of the match when Padia received a pass from freshman defender Jodi Leroy from the top of the box to give UTSA the 1-0 lead at the 43-minute mark of the first half.

In the second half action, UNT (3-1) had three opportunities to tie the match but freshman goalkeeper Nicoline Joergensen came up huge for the Birds. The Mean Green’s first attempt came at the 76-minute mark when Veronica Ayala and Julie Lackey had their shots stopped by Joergensen.

North Texas would then make a final attempt to score but again Joergensen came up with the save on Brittany Cleveland’s shot attempt with less than nine minutes to play in the match.

 McMurry Announces 2008 Recruiting Class

College Soccer NewsSoccerWanderer writes "Second-year McMurry men’s soccer coach Tim Grove has announced his 2008 recruiting class.

With his first full offseason to work with, Grove gathered twelve new players to run on the pitch for McMurry in 2008. Of the 12 players, four are midfielders, four more are defenders, three are goalkeepers, and one is a forward.

“We looked at over 350 prospective players and decided on these 12 guys,” Grove said. “We decided to take only these 12 players because we have the core of our team returning and we wanted to strengthen and add depth to certain positions. With these new guys we feel that we did that.”

The four new midfielders are Roger Arredondo, Ben Sherwood, Jacob Balleza and Zach Davis.

Arredondo played high school soccer at Bryan High School and he also won a club state championship with FC Select. Sherwood played prep soccer at Hightower High School in Houston where he was a first-team all-district selection and also played for Texas Premier Soccer Club. Balleza played for Bangs High School and the club team San Antonio City, while Davis was a two-time first-team All-League selection at Calaveras High School in California.

The four new defenders are David Russo, Miguel Rodriguez, Logan Thibodeaux and Alan Vazquez.

Russo helped Cinco Ranch High School to a third-place finish at the 5-A state tournament his senior year and was also an all-district selection while playing his club ball with Texas Premier . Rodriguez played for Cypress Ridge High School and also the Houston Pride club team, while Thibodeaux played prep ball at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas and for the Tejanos 88 Soccer Club. Vazquez played for Langham Creek High School where he was named the Gatorade Rookie of the Year in 2006 and also helped his team to a district title in 2007 while captaining the Texas Premier Soccer Club.

The incoming goalies are Curtis Crocker, Leeland Karpf and Joseph Kaufman. Crocker, Karpf and Kaufman are all contending to replace Jesper Sehested, who was a second-team all-conference selection last year as well as the American Southwest Conference Freshman Defensive Player of the Year. Sehested, a native of Denmark, was a one-year wonder for McMurry as he returned to his native country to pursue a professional career. Crocker played high school soccer at Robinson High School where he was a first-team all-district selection as well as team MVP. Karpf played prep ball at Klein Collins High School where he was a two-time first-team all-district selection. Karpf also won a club state championship with the TSC Texans and was a member of the South Texas ODP team. Kaufman played for Corpus Christi Carroll High School and was named his districts most improved player.

The lone forward added to the roster is Alberto Lujan. Lujan was his district’s MVP as well as a first-team all-district selection at Irvin High School in El Paso he also spent time with the El Paso Patriots of the PDL.

The McMurry men’s soccer team has two scrimmages slated before it opens the regular season against Texas Wesleyan on Aug. 29. "
